Entrepreneur Showcase Video

project context

Interviewing an entrepreneur you admire is a beneficial way to learn more about being a successful business owner and learning what the keys to success are and what mistakes they made along the way.

I was eager to interview Marie Poulin and learn what she did to rise to the massive success she has found with running her flagship course, Notion Mastery.

Goal

For this project, my goal was to spend time understanding how Marie got started, what she felt really propelled her to success, and what mistakes she learned along the way. I was tasked with presenting this information in a video format telling her story. I wanted to use my multimedia skills and storytelling creativity to present what I learned in the interview in a compelling and interesting way. Most of the students assigned this project submitted a simple 5-minute video just summarizing their interview, so I wanted to take a different angle and really tell a story.

Process

I spent an hour and a half interviewing Marie with a series of questions that helped me get to know her and her business. Questions I asked her included how she got started, how she recognized the opportunity in her business, how she found mentors, how she built her management team and what their backgrounds are, how her business growth is funded, what mistakes she made, and how she learned from them, and what she believes the keys to success in her business are.

I recorded the interview so that I could spend the time talking and asking questions, as opposed to taking notes. I knew that watching back the interview after would give me the opportunity to do two things:

  • Review the interview and make notes to create my video script from

  • Critique myself as an interviewer and learn ways to be better for the next time I interview someone

Once the interview was complete, I re-watched it and took notes, and then wrote and practiced a script. I wanted to find fitting b-roll to add to the script so it wasn’t just my face as a talking head the entire time. Once I had a list of b-roll, I filmed a video of me telling the story. And then I worked to put the project components together. I edited the video in Final Cut Pro and the final project was ready to go.
