Third Draft of Preliminary Floor Plan

After the second draft, we compiled notes over a more extended time. We wanted to give ourselves time to simmer over some thoughts and get some input from other people. Some of the changes we ultimately sent our designer were:

  • Add a small high window above the shower in the second bathroom. I hate a dark bathroom, so I think a window is a must.

  • We don’t want a door between our master bathroom and master closet. This is a door that really just ends up being in the way because it’s always open for us.

  • I knew I wanted our kitchen sink and window centered in the wall area, because I have a vision of how I want cabinetry and open shelving to surround that sink and the symmetry is critical for that looking nice.

  • We opted to remove the dividing wall in the guest bathroom because there’s not a need for it and it just makes the space feel smaller.

  • We opted to switch the two back sliding doors from the great room to a single 4-panel sliding door that will open from the center. This will give a more cohesive indoor/outdoor living space once we have furniture on the patio.

  • We wanted a wider fireplace so that when a TV is hung above it, we can have a big enough wall to accommodate a large TV without it dwarfing the wall and the fireplace below.

  • We opted to add a column and a privacy wall to the open side of our back patio.

  • We also changed the size of the sliding door in the gym to be smaller and added a dog door in the wall there. While a big huge slider would be so nice for the light, we also are considering that gyms come with equipment, that primarily is placed along walls. The bigger the sliding door, the less usable wall space we have to put gym equipment, hang shelves or hooks for storage, etc. It’s more important that we have plenty of room for the stuff we want in our gym, than having an oversized sliding door.

One thing we have spent a lot of time doing is considering our lifestyle and what things we would need or want in our day-to-day. When you’re building a custom home, the sky is the limit, and you can do really anything you want.

This is the plan our designer came back with after these changes.

With each design revision, we feel like we get a more detailed and much closer to the final plan layout. And then it will be time to move on to design and architectural details and the more detailed plans. We also know this part, though it feels like it has taken some time, it’s not the part that will take the longest.
