Kitchen Tile Backsplash and Floating Shelves

BEFORE

This year we tackled our first tile project with our kitchen backsplash! And floating shelves to end off the cabinets and give a good finish line for the backsplash. This project is one that we learned from a few mistakes, but I still love how it turned out.

I’m going to point out the mistakes, even if you can’t really see them very easily in the photos for two reasons.

  1. We’re beginner DIY’ers. So there’s a lot of learning.

  2. It’s okay to make mistakes and have imperfections while you learn! The important thing is that you’re doing it!

That said, here are the mistakes we made in this project:

  • We didn’t plan well enough for the tiles to terminate on greater than half a tile on the edge near the bar. We have a few slivers there and the slivers should actually be on the inside corner IF there have to be slivers.

  • We didn’t tape off one side (the first side) when we did the caulk, so the line wasn’t very straight. We corrected that on the other side and it was so much better!

  • The floating shelves didn’t get sanded quite enough to have as smooth a finish as the cabinets.

This project made a really big impact on our kitchen appearance but also our confidence in DIY’ing! We hadn’t done tile before nor built floating shelves. So, mistakes and all, we’re so thrilled with this project!
